The Women Behind The Scenes of The Stories We Love

The Women's History Month theme is "Women Who Tell Our Stories," so it's time to highlight just that.

During Women's History Month, it's easy to namedrop actresses constantly running across our screens. However, the actresses in movies and tv shows are not the only people who put in lots of work to make our favorite stories come to life. Countless women also work behind the scenes to help tell these stories.

Here are some fantastic writers, directors, showrunners, costume designers, and makeup artists who help create and tell the stories we love to watch.

Ava DuVernay

She is a filmmaker who often works as a writer, producer, and director on many of her projects. Her most well-known films include Selma, A Wrinkle in Time, and 13th. Her films focus on black families and how their experiences are affected by social and systematic injustice.

Penny Marshall

She is a director, producer, and actress. She served as the director for classics like Big and A League of Their Own. Her work on Big became the first movie directed by a woman to gross over $100 million.

Ruth Carter

She is the Academy Award-winning costume designer for Marvel's Black Panther, making her the first black woman to win in that category. She has also worked on films like Coming to America, Selma, What's Love Got To Do With It, and The Butler.

Nora Ephron

She is a writer, director, and producer best known for her work on Julie & Julia. She also wrote the screenplay for classics like When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle.

Shonda Rhimes

She created the production company Shondaland where she produced hit shows like Grey's Anatomy, How To Get Away With Murder, Bridgerton, and Inventing Anna. Almost, if not all, the Shondaland series have a strong female lead.

Callie Khouri

She is a screenwriter, producer, and director best known for penning the script for Thelma & Louise. Her other work includes Patsy & Loretta and Nashville, and her feminist forward storytelling earned her multiple screenwriting awards.

Gloria Calderon Kellet

She is a creator, producer, writer, and actress best known for her work on One Day At A Time. She also worked on How I Met Your Mother, Jane The Virgin, Dead To Me, and Mr. Iglesias.

Amy Sherman Palladio

She is a writer, director, and producer best known for her work on Gilmore Girls and Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. Her work has a signature dialogue style with heavy use of pop culture references delivered with fast pace comedic timing.

Angela Kang

She is best known for her work on the zombie horror show, The Walking Dead. She started as a story editor and worked her way to producer and showrunner.

Ve Niel

She is the SFX makeup artist behind classic characters like Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and Mrs. Doubtfire. Some of her other work can be found in The Hunger Games and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchises.
